2013 Goals Survey Open Through November 10

On October 14th, Joomla's first public survey about overall project goals for the upcoming year was launched. After originally announcing this survey would remain open for two weeks, it has since been decided to leave the survey open through November 10.

The Best Thing About a Summit...

Javier Gomez and I had the privilege to represent the Joomla! project at this year's Community Leadership Summit in Portland, Oregon on July 14 and 15. I had a great time at this conference last year, and I was excited to have the opportunity to return. This year's conference was better for me than last year's, and I am happy to share a few thoughts here about my experience.

A Tale of Two Cookies

I had the opportunity to join two recent JoomlaDays: JoomlaDay New England on March 31, and JoomlaDagen Nederland (JoomlaDay Netherlands) on April 21 and 22. I had a wonderful time at both of these events, and I would like to share some about my experiences.

If You Want To Build A Lighthouse...

When the Joomla Community Magazine launched in July 2010, the Editor's introduction for that first issue included a metaphor for the new JCM and team, which was that of ship built by a crew who longed for the sea. Now, twenty one months later, I am stepping aside from the JCM to better focus on my new role as President of Open Source Matters. I want to share some closing thoughts about the JCM and team, along with a new metaphor for what I think they represent for our project and our community.

The Roadmap For a Great Joomla! 3.0 UX

Joomla! 3.0 is scheduled to be released in September 2012. It will include major new core features built on top of our rapidly advancing framework. But in order to apply that power effectively, everything has to be tied together in a simple and intuitive way that will result in a great user experience (UX). In this interview with longtime community contributor and Joomla! User Experience team member Kyle Ledbetter, you'll learn about his UX vision for Joomla! 3.0 and the high level roadmap for how we will get there.

Administrator Templates - Does your backend need an upgrade?

One of Joomla!'s best features is how easy it is to change the look and feel of a website simply by using a different template. But many users may not know that the look and feel of the backend administrator's area for a Joomla! website is also defined by a template, and backend templates can be changed just as easily as frontend templates. This article shows how to do that and also gives links to some different current free administrator templates.

Our Joomla! Conjunction

In the field of astronomy, when two or more celestial bodies appear close to each other, that event is called a conjunction. Astronomical conjunctions are beautiful and rare occurances in our night sky that don't last for very long. Right now a rare and relatively short-lived convergence of important milestones and activities are all taking place for our project. Right now is our Joomla! conjunction.

What I learned at the Community Leadership Summit

I (along with Sandra Warren from the Community Leadership Team) was given the distinct privilege to represent the Joomla! project at this year's Community Leadership Summit in Portland, Oregon on July 23rd and 24th. It was a great opportunity to meet other people from around the world who are all passionate about serving their open source communities and learn from their experiences.

Navigating the code development process (part 2 of 2)

While at JAB11 in May, I heard comments from more than a few developers that it could be difficult to get their code accepted into the Joomla! core. So I committed to publishing a JCM article to try and address those concerns. In the first article of this two part series, I gave an overview of how the existing development process works. In this month's article, Mark Dexter and Louis Landry from the Joomla! Production Leadership Team have responded to questions about the development process that were submitted by other developers in the community.

Navigating the code development process (part 1 of 2)

While at JAB11 last month, I heard comments from more than a few developers that it could be difficult to get their code accepted into the Joomla! core. So I committed to publishing a JCM article to try and address those concerns. In the first article of this two part series, we will take an overview of how the existing development process works. Developers are encouraged to post their questions and comments below this article throughout the month of June (the earlier the better), so that some of those questions and comments may be used as the basis for next month's concluding article in this series.

Lessons about openness and transparency from a budget discussion

Last month, the 2011 Joomla! draft budget was published and community feedback on it was invited. I believe this was the first time that community feedback was invited before our project's budget was formally approved.

Coming together to announce a new era...

Unless you've been stuck under a REALLY big snowdrift, hopefully you're aware that Joomla! 1.6 was released on January 10, 2011.  Over three years in development, this new version adds many important features, lays a new architectural foundation for future releases, and starts us down a new path of time based release cycles. Joomla! 1.6 marks the beginning of a new era for our project. Here is a story about how our community worked together to announce this new era to the world...

2010: A great year for Joomla!

2010 has been a great year for Joomla!. As our project celebrated its fifth birthday, we also surpassed 22 million Joomla! downloads worldwide and 138 million extension downloads from the Joomla! When this issue is launched, I will be "hard at work" at the JoomlaDay West conference in San Jose, California.
